A beloved comic book series is coming to life on The CW and the cast portraying the well-known characters has started to coalesce.

“Archie” will serve as the source material for a pilot coming to The CW named after the fictitious town “Riverdale” where the high-school hijinks take place with a much darker tone.

The show initially pitched for Fox is described as, “Set in the present day and based on the iconic Archie Comics characters, “Riverdale” is a surprising and subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring the surrealism of small-town life — the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade.”

The announced cast includes:

K.J. Apa as Archie Andrews
Luke Perry as Fred Andrews
Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper
Cole Sprouse as Jughead Jones
Ashleigh Murray as Josie McCoy
Asha Bromfield as Melody
Mädchen Amick as Alice Cooper
Marisol Nichols as Hermione Lodge
Madelaine Petsch as Cheryl Blossom
Nathalie Boltt as Penelope Blossom

Greg Berlanti will serve as Executive Producer for “Riverdale”. He is also behind “Flash”, “Arrow” and “Legends of Tomorrow” at The CW and “Supergirl” on CBS.
