Book Review: Fangirl

Fangirl came to me as a highly recommended book. It looked like something I'd like, having been to convention and read fanfiction. Overall it left me with mixed feelings.

The story starts on college move in day for a girl name Cath. She is very introverted and nervous for everything this new experience will bring.  She also has a more outgoing twin sister Wren, whom she is very close with. Cath learns to deal with the challenges of her new life far away from her father and not being with her twin sister all the time. Her roommate is intimidating and she is taking an advanced creative writing class as well as keep up and finishing her most important fan story to date. There is even a spark of romance between her and a friend. Cath learns that being a college student is a lot more than homework and parties in this coming of age story.

I feel conflicted about what rating to give this book, my like and dislike for it comes in waves. Partially because it was not the book I was expecting to read, so it left me a bit disappointed and for some reason I could not quite connect to Cath's character. However, it is very well written. I love how it feel like real life. I could find my college experience, especially my freshman year, between the pages. It has real problems that normal people face, like where is the cafeteria or finding friends, moving away is never simple. Cath's relationship with her sister Wren is realistic as well. They argue, make up and act like a real family. Overall I have a great appreciation and respect for this book and how it portrays the freshman experience.

I've decide to give it a 6.3/10. I would recommend this book, it's a good read for those in college or reminiscing about what going to college actually is homework friends, family, and the occasional party.
