Street Beat: Bringing STEM Awareness To Girls And MinoritiesThis week on Street Beat, host Rob Stone looks at STEM careers and the need to bring STEM awareness to girls and minorities. First, SooJi Min, the Board President for the Michigan Organization on Adolescent Sexual Health (MOASH) which has a new project called Michigan Youth (MY) Girls Say that offers holistic programming to K-12 self-identified girls in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to cultivate personal advocacy and resilience. Then, Board Secretary Kathie Carruth, the Co-chair Career Pathways from the Kids First Initiative talkS about their recent STEAM Camp for under-served kids. Then, John Paul Rea, the Executive Director of Macomb County Dept of Planning and Economic Development, and Mark Jurcak, the President of Futuramic Tool & Engineering, discuss an upcoming event called Macomb County Manufacturing Day which introduces teens to manufacturing careers. Finally, Don Hutchison, Dean of Engineering, Manufacturing and Industrial Technologies from Oakland Community College, talks about the PLC Tech program which trains people for manufacturing/STEM careers.
