What better way to get into the holiday spirit than to donate to a good cause? We’ve dedicated this week’s playlist to the talented bands performing at the Indie(PEN)dence Benefit Concert!
This will be my second year participating in DETROIT by DETROIT, and I couldn’t be happier. Last year, I teamed up with my good friend Omar Aragones to cover Mayer Hawthorne. Omar and I decided to do something a bit different this year; we plan on covering Detroit artist Sixto Rodriguez.
Okay, so she has her own band, her band has played the renowned Metro Times Blowout, and she was awarded a full scholarship to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston for their summer program – where she was crowned the winner of the Berklee College of Music Singer/Songwriter competition…twice! Oh, did we mention she has accomplished all of this by the age of 16?! Yeah, we’re pretty impressed too.
Mittenfest fans, listen up: this year, the annual tradition that celebrates music, culture, and generates money for good cause has a new edition to the festivities: S’Mittenfest. The kickoff for the newest Detroit summer tradition will be headlined with 21 bands – 20 of which are from Michigan and 1 from Ohio – and all proceeds will go to help fund the non-profit organization 826 Michigan. Mittenfest, 826 Michigan’s winter festival, has been a successful 7-year running tradition in Detroit and has managed to raise over $75,000 in support of its free programs for school aged children.
CW50 recently had the chance to sit down with Jason Stollsteimer, front man for Detroit-area rockers The Hounds Below. Jason joins Mathew Hofman, Adam Padden, and Will Shattuck in a 4-piece line-up that produces catchy melodies, with toe-tapping beats – and they’ve quickly built quite a reputation both in the Detroit music scene, and on a national scale, as well.
The Magic Stick in Detroit was the location for the kickoff of the 16th Annual Metro Times Blowout and The CW50 Street Team was there to capture the festivities. 25 Bands from all over the metro area showed up to the event to showcase their musical skill.
