Imagine Jay-Z’s “Big Pimpin’,” Lil Jon’s “Get Low,” and “Root Down” by the Beastie Boys…played in the style of folk music. Awesome, right? Putting a folk spin on classic rap and hip-hop songs is exactly what local bands will be doing this Sunday at The Blind Pig in Ann Arbor at the 4th annual FOLK THE POLICE showcase.

“We all have real jobs now and do the ‘grown-up’ thing, but this is my way to break free from that – we just love music.” You may remember the name Scott Allen from the band Thunderbirds Are Now! – the Metro Detroit band that made a name for themselves in the early 2000s, signing with French Kiss Records and touring throughout Europe, America, and parts of Australia at a very young age.

Mittenfest, 826 Michigan’s winter festival, has been a successful 7-year running tradition in Detroit and has managed to raise over $75,000 in support of its free programs for school aged children.
Michigan might not have the infamous Hollywood sign, but we have had some impressive Hollywood movies filmed here…and with good reason, too. Firstly, there is Detroit, with a gritty, industrial vibe, Gothic-looking churches, a crystal-clear view of Canada over the river, The Detroit People Mover, and a unique skyline backdrop. Michigan also boasts the history-rich college town of Ann Arbor, white sandy beaches of Lake Michigan along the west side of the state, and a little island right at the tip of the mitten that we like to call Mackinac. With that remarkable list of locations, it’s no wonder why more and more movies are being filmed here.
Feeling a bit drowsy by lunch time? Need a pick-me-up other than that over-priced, three-shot espresso you’re holding? (Yeah, that’s one of our favorite parts too.)
