“America’s Next Top Model” is returning with new talent and a new judge – the viewer. Cycle 19 of the show will offer an interactive experience where, for the first time in “America’s Next Top Model” history, the public will be able to have a say in who stays and who goes in the competition.

Beginning on May 24, fans will have two opportunities each week to vote online at www.cwtv.com and choose their favorite contestants based on photo shoots taken during production. These scores will be used by Tyra Banks and the judges to help determine who is eliminated each week. Viewers will also have the opportunity to have their comments and video messages featured in the show when the cycle airs in the fall. In addition to Banks and returning judge, fashion pr maven Kelly Cutrone, international male model Rob Evans will join the judging panel as the third permanent judge. Johnny Wujek, stylist to the stars, including singer Katy Perry, rounds out the group as the new creative consultant, who will guide the models through their photo shoots.

Cycle 19 is also the first-ever college edition, inspired by Banks’ recent graduation from Harvard Business School, and will include students from all across the educational spectrum, from four-year colleges and universities to beauty school students. These women from all walks of life, all parts of the nation, and all types of continuing education, will be invited to show their school spirit — and their modeling chops— to Tyra and the judges. The girls will vie for a prize package that will launch their modeling careers, as well as help them continue to earn their degree.

I had a pet mallard for an hour. I named her Duffy.

While I was heating up leftover ham and scalloped potatoes in the microwave, I glanced out my kitchen window into the backyard. A female mallard duck was sitting on the edge of my pool cover.

I’ve had this 12’ round by 4’ deep albatross, um, I mean swimming pool, for 13 years. It’s so small, when people see it, they think it’s a hot tub. The most interesting birds I’ve ever seen go near the pool cover were a grackle and a pigeon. You decide which of those is the more interesting bird.

Now, on a random Wednesday evening, Duffy has graced my yard with her ducky presence. And she didn’t just land and fly away. She stayed. I clocked her at over an hour. Enough time to take pictures and view her through my binoculars.

Many thoughts crossed my mind. Can you capture and tame a wild duck and keep her for a pet? Is it legal? Who would know? I didn’t want to scare her off so I stayed about 40 feet away in the kitchen. She kept dipping into the pool, which is filled with rainwater. I wish I could have approached closer and taken clearer pictures, but I didn’t want her to fly off.

Where was her mate? Mallards usually travel in pairs. The way she kept hopping into the pool cover, out of sight, I wondered if she was in there hatching eggs. Not sure how I feel about my yard being used as a maternity ward. I’d have to charge a fee.

You should know; I rarely swim in the pool during the summer. I hate opening and closing the pool. It’s a lot of work. It’s the albatross around my neck. Or in my yard, as the case may be. Has it been worth all the years of effort for one hour with Duffy?

I see my fair share of squirrels and chipmunks in the backyard, but a mallard? This is big time. It’s like Elvis coming back to life and playing a show at Meadow Brook Music Festival. Well, maybe not Elvis. There would have to be a penguin in my yard for it to be as big as Elvis. How about Justin Bieber? A mallard is the Justin Bieber of backyard birds.

And I enjoyed a private, one-hour show. What a sight. A mallard sitting on an albatross.

You don’t see that every day.

The low profile real-life couple have been touted to maybe star together in the upcoming adaptation of the popular book series “Fifty Shades of Grey.” However, when Nina spoke with MTV, she said that she would not want to be in the movie with Ian, but that rather either one of them should do the movie with a different co-star.

“I don’t know if that’s a good idea,” Nina said, “I think it would be better [if] either he should get it or I should get it.”

Nina added that it’s better if two actors that already star in The Vampire Diaries together should do movies separately. “If it’s two of the same people, the fans will always see you as … they’ll see me as Elena and they’ll see [Ian] as Damon if we do a film together.”

However, it also seems as if Nina would be just fine not doing the film at all. When asked about the book, Nina said, “All I’ve heard is that it’s very scandalous, to say the least,” and added that she has not read it yet.

She is actually rooting for Ian to get the part more than she is hoping for herself to get it.

“I know that apparently he’s really great for the role,” Nina said, “so, I hope that he gets it.”

Two females – Sheila, born in June 2011 to JoAnn, and Isa, born in August 2011 to Charlotte – can be seen exploring their habitat with the adult mob. The four youngest joeys, all still hidden in the pouch, were born in January and April of this year. Their genders and names will be determined when they emerge.

“It’s always a lot of fun to see a joey poke its head out of its mother’s pouch, and there will be plenty of opportunities for that in the coming weeks,” said Robert Lessnau, Detroit Zoological Society Curator of Mammals. “Sheila and Isa are already hopping around and are easy to spot because of their size.”

Born the size of a jellybean, a joey will live in its mother’s pouch until it has developed and matured, emerging when it reaches about six months old. A female kangaroo can carry three offspring in different stages simultaneously: one out-of-pouch joey, one in-pouch joey and one dormant embryo, born once the eldest joey is independent. She can produce two types of milk at the same time for both the infant and the older joey.

The red kangaroo (Macropus rufus) is the largest marsupial, or pouched mammal. The male has a reddish-brown coat with a white underside, and can grow up to 6 feet tall and weigh 200 pounds. The female is a bluish-grey color – earning her the nickname “blue flyer” – and only reaches about 3 feet tall and 30-40 pounds.

The Detroit Zoo’s Australian Outback Adventure is home to 18 red kangaroos, four red-necked wallabies and two emus. Visitors can get face to face with the marsupials from right inside their habitat, traveling along a winding path while the animals are free to bound and graze wherever they please.

Fresh on their US tour with a first stop in Detroit. My Show Now host Greg Gogava sat down with Korn guitarist James “Munky” Shaffer to talk about his life, the bands journey and secrets to success in the music industry.

After the US dates, Korn will head to Europe.

GG: What’s your favorite place in Europe.

JS: I love Italy because of the food, but I also love eastern Europe.

GG: What are you guys working on next.

JS:  We’re gonna make another record obviously, but what it’s gonna sound like. *smiles and shrugs* We sort of gather techniques, and as technology progresses, our techniques for recording also progress.

GG: Tell me about your most memorable moment from the band’s history.

JS: We were on tour with Ozzy. Him and Sharon Osbourne gave us our first gold record. We were on stage. They had brought the gold records in. It was our first gold record from our first album. When we came back, they were in there with a bunch of champagne and gold records. It was just so surreal. We’re getting gold records and Ozzy is giving them to us. It was just one of those days that I’ll never forget.

GG: How did you approach the combination of electronic sound with your genre?

JS: Really it was Jonathan coming to me and letting me hear some of the Skrillex Scary Monsters album and you know, after he played those tracks he said “What do you think about incorporating some of these elements into the new Korn album.” I thought it was a great idea you know cause there’s a lot of similarities, very dark sounding, the bass. We’ve always been trying to do low, heavy bass stuff for a long time.

GG: How difficult was it to combine those two styles?

JS: I think the difficulties were in the mix.

GG: What’s the biggest asset for a band to succeed?

JS: For this band I think it’s really been about re-inventing each record and wiping the slate clean.

GG: What’s your favorite thing to do outside of music?

JS: Honestly, just being with my family.

GG: That must be difficult in this profession.

JS: It is. When we get home, those moments with your family, you appreciate them even more.

GG: How do you picture Korn in the future?

JS: That’s always been the big question. Before each record, it’s what are we gonna do next? We leave it kind of open.

GG: How much time does it take to create an album?

JS: Usually takes about six months from writing to finished product.

Let’s admit it — we’re all either actively researching a new TV or thinking about it, so even if you just bought a new set, you’re going to be interested in this.

The Uppleva is a TV, Blu-Ray player and speaker system all built into stylish Ikea furniture. The wireless subwoofer is a nice feature. It’ll be released in the U.S. in 2013 with prices starting under $1000.

This could be a major shift in the way consumers buy home theater equipment. Instead of buying each component separately and praying they gel — Ikea’s engineers and artists did all the heavy lifting for you. This is a big change for Ikea, since they’re historically not an electronics store. I’m sure the domestic TV retailers are watching very closely and/or developing their own versions.

According to Matt Burns’ TechCrunch report, the specs of the TV are impressive enough for some tech nerds, but this won’t be a replacement for a bona fide cinema experience. Most notably, you’ll only hear stereo sound (no surround).

It’s available in many configurations including color, screen size and extra cabinets. There’s only room for one or maybe two small devices (game consoles) to be placed next to the Blu-Ray player. The demo video explains that the front doors won’t block your remote control signals.

Personally, I’m a fan of Ikea products for their reasonable prices and quality materials. Doesn’t hurt that you can get delicious meatballs and cinnamon rolls while you’re there.

For Ikea Newbies

Ikea is not a typical big-box store experience. Just about everything at Ikea will require some assembly. If you’ve ever put together Lego block sets you’ll love putting together Ikea furniture. I’m weird, but I think it’s half the fun! The store is split into two floors. The top floor is mostly for viewing assembled pieces and the ground floor is where you put all the components in your cart.
