"I'd Walk A Mile For A Camel:" Lessons In Working For It

By Kenneth Bryant, Jr.

When I was a kid one of the most popular marketing brands was for Camel cigarettes. I can remember wanting to "walk a mile for a Camel" although I was too young to smoke at the time. However, when I got older I walked a mile just to smoke a Camel cigarette.

I am amazed at what I was willing to do to get what I wanted, even when what I wanted wasn't good for me.

How about walking 21 miles for a job?

I'm also amazed by the 21 mile walk a Detroit man makes daily to get to work to perform his job. That's really incredible. Walking to work for ten years to do what he believes he was destined to do - work. What a great work ethic. Work is a good thing. You can't really believe for anything, or achieve anything, if you're not willing to work hard for it.

Why do so many run away from work or fail to do what will ultimately get them what they want? In order to accomplish, or be successful at anything of significance, you must be willing to work for it.

Work will help you become all that you are capable of being. Not working and getting what you want the easy way will only result in you losing it the easy way. Remember, easy come, easy go. Life is not easy. We often go through challenges and struggles to get where we want to be in life.

What 56 year old James Robertson has shown is the importance of a dedicated and good work ethic and how successful you can be if you will keep working at it and never give up even when you have to walk 21 miles to achieve it.

We have got to stop looking for excuses to not work and start looking for opportunities to work, even if a large part of the work performed is walking to get to work.

Not only will it make life better for you, it will encourage others and make life better for them too if they will follow your example.

Be patient, it took ten years for Mr. Robertson's hard work to pay off, but the process made him a responsible, caring, respectful, encouraging and humble success. Now what could be better than that?
