Street Beat: Community Assistance During The Holidays
This week on Street Beat, host Jill Washburn talks to groups that are matching donors up with children, families, or seniors, who need some assistance for the holidays.
First, Jill sits down with Leslie Kilgore, of North End Youth Improvement Council, to discuss their Adopt a Child for Christmas program. They talk about how Adopt a Child matches donors with underprivileged kids and provides them with warm clothing and some gifts for Christmas and, just as important, gives them mentoring and encouragement, too.
Next, Jill talks to Erica Medvinsky of Volunteers of America about their Adopt a Family program. They talk about how families in the community can help families in need, by bringing them some much needed items and some joy for the holiday season. They also talk about the benefits of showing family members how it feels to help.
Then, Wendy Darga of Hart Middle School tells Jill about their Helping Harts program. When school administrators became aware of students who might have a tough time getting through the holidays, Hart staffers took matters into their own hands and created the Helping Harts program. The program lets students and their families, help other students and their families, and it's completely anonymous, so no classmate needs to feel embarrassed or uncomfortable.
And finally, Frank Kubik from Focus: HOPE joins the show to tell Jill about their Share With a Senior program and their Family to Family program, both of which match people in need with donors who will "adopt" them and see that their needs are met for the holiday season.
And, all of the groups talk about how viewers can get in the holiday spirit and get involved to help others in the community.
