DETROIT (CW50) Social media giant Facebook made waves Tuesday with the announcement it is dipping a toe into Google’s territory — by offering a search function.

Founder Mark Zuckerberg made the big announcement live, saying in the interest of privacy users would be able to use the search box only to find things that have been shared with them. The function would be called “graph search.”

Amid growing privacy concerns, Facebook assured the world only things included by friends and followers or marked “public” will show up in search. Users will be able to search for music, movies, headlines, and more.

Jessica Guynn, reporting live for the Los Angeles Times, wrote on Twitter: “Facebook says we can find restaurants in San Francisco that top chefs (not Bravo’s) like to nosh at. And other searches like that.”

She quoted Zuckerberg as saying, “This is just some really neat stuff. This is one of the coolest things we have done in a while.”

Facebook is the world’s largest social media network, with more than 1 billion users. It went public last year, debuting with a value of $100 billion.
