Sunday, June 11, 2011
Without strong male leadership in their lives, children are more likely to end up incarcerated, abuse drugs and alcohol, and their chances of graduating high school are significantly decreased.
This week on Street Beat, Syma Chowdhry and the community correspondents find out about four organizations helping men become better fathers or providing mentors for those children who have need a strong male role model.
First, Joseph Farley talks to Syma about the special programs offered by Friends of the Fathers. www.friendsofthefathers.org
Then Community Correspondent Antonio Guevara learns about a program aimed at high school teens needing guidance sponsored by the organization 100 Black Men from its President Anton Chastang and Bill Toples, the Chair of the Health and Wellness Committee. www.100blackmendetroit.org
Next Guevara gets the details on a Big Brothers Big Sisters program for children with incarcerated parents from Ken Coleman. www.bbbsdetroit.org
Finally, Syma learns about the Head Start Fatherhood Initiative from Larry Charleston III and Community Correspondent Stephanie McClung offers a suggestion for being a better parent. www.matrixhumanservices.org
