New Year…New Chapter...New Script!

Michigan Film Gala
"We will open the book.  Its pages are blank.  We are going to put words on them ourselves.  The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day"
~Edith Lovejoy Pierce

The DGGs brought in 2011 as attendees of the first ever Michigan Film Gala.

Michigan Film GalaWhen I think of celebrating the New Year, I think of the quote previously stated by Edith Lovejoy Pierce...a time to cease every opportunity that comes your way and create a new chapter in the book of your life.  The Film Gala was indeed the perfect first page.

Thanks to Global Pictures, Michigan Movie Magazine, and Specs Howard,  not only did we have an excuse to dress in our most fabulous attire, but we were granted the opportunity to mingle with the greatest film achievers in the state.

Michigan Film GalaThe event was hosted by comedian, actor, and Michigan native Brandon T. Jackson (Tropic Thunder, Big Momma's House 3), and we laughed the night away as talented filmmakers like Lawrence Lamont Jenkins (Corner Store) showcased their work and a panel of experts answered questions from aspiring artists.

Michigan Film GalaI was substantially inspired when I noticed an old friend sitting at the head table as a panelist.  Qasim "Q" Basir is a young filmmaker who has surpassed many expectations already.  He is currently anticipating the nationwide release of his newest feature film Mooz-lum which stars industry heavy hitters Danny Glover, Nia Long, and Evan Ross (of The CW's 90210 and yes..Diana's son).   We intensely listened as Q spoke to us of sacrifice, determination, and never giving up your passion.  He has been through so many tough obstacles which I'm sure many of us can relate to, and in the end,  it was worth the struggle.  Now, he is recognized by the film and political world (for his Yes We Can video series).

As I surveyed the room of intriguing, beautiful dreamers (including my fellow DGG Bethany and amazing friend Shaina) and we ate our last meal of 2010, it was more than evident…THIS NEW YEAR will be the best chapter yet!

Don't be afraid to create your masterpiece!

XOXO,
Lauren
